Green MP Caroline Lucas presented to packed audience in Malvern visit

There was standing room only at Lyttelton Well, as Malvern Hills Green Party welcomed party members and public to a talk with party co-leader Caroline Lucas last Friday. Caroline is Member of Parliament for Brighton Pavilion but spent her childhood in Malvern.

Discussion covered the dramatic events of the preceding 24 hours; the High Court ruling that Parliament must be consulted on the terms of triggering Brexit, the Richmond by-election following the resignation of Conservative MP Zac Goldsmith, and the Lincolnshire Conservative MP resigning his seat to force another by-election.

Caroline said, 'People need to understand parliamentary scrutiny on Brexit isn't about whether or not we leave. That decision has been taken. Article 50 is about where we are going. The level of anger demonstrates the depth to which trust in political processes has fallen.” She further argued “Parliament and councils must be more reflective of the communities we serve, maybe a General Election in 2017 would be a good way to address that”.

In the ensuing question and answer session, Caroline pressed for more urgent action on climate change, explaining how investment in renewable technology is a win-win: more jobs, innovation to stimulate growth in our economy, better for the environment, and much lower clean-up costs. Time is also running out for our public services, she cautioned, urging the audience to keep up the fight for a genuinely public NHS.

“Online polls around policy show massive support for what the Green Party stands for. People like green policies when they see them”. The packed room wholeheartedly agreed and gave our inspiring member of parliament a rousing round of applause.
