Responding to Reform’s local elections campaign event, Green Party co-leader Adrian Ramsay MP said:

“We know people are struggling after 14 years of Conservative austerity, now followed by the crushing disappointment of a new Labour government making more cuts to front line services. But Reform will never be the answer to the decline of the two old parties.

“Reform is a party designed to benefit the very richest and has no track record of delivering for people. Green councillors up and down the country are delivering real hope and real change in their communities every day.

“We are offering a hard-working and democratic alternative to the dead end, divisive choice of Reform and their impossible promises.”

Reacting to large price hikes that kick in today at the start of what has been dubbed ‘awful April’, co-leader of the Green party, Carla Denyer, said:

“Energy bills up to nearly £2000 a year. Water bills up by 31% in some areas. Basic food prices keep rising – the list goes on. People aren’t fooling around when they say today is the start of “Awful April”. Especially awful for single parents who we know will be hit hardest by these price hikes

“These spiralling costs come on the back of axing winter fuel payments for pensioners, refusing to remove the two-child benefit cap and cutting benefits for the sick and disabled.

“These are political choices. Rather than making the poorest and most vulnerable in society bear the brunt of the cost of living crisis, Labour could have chosen instead to tax a tiny percentage of the wealth of multi-millionaires and billionaires. They’ve made a choice, to take money off the old, ill and disabled.

“Labour have again and again made the wrong choices, which has left many of the poorest households at breaking point.”

denied a vote in local elections in May because ‘Local Government Re-organisation’,
forced on communities by the Labour Government, will abolish many councils,
including Malvern Hills District Council. Now that we know that elections will be held
here, let’s make sure the Government hears form local people at the ballot boxes on
1 st May, and we get as many Green Councillors elected as possible, right across The
Malvern Hills District and beyond
.”

Our target County Council Divisions and candidates are

We will also be fielding candidates in Malvern Langland (Simon Johnson), Hallow
(Richard Kimberlee) and Tenbury ( Peter Jones). Unfortunately, we do not have the
resources to campaign in these areas, but it is important voters have the opportunity
to express a “Green” preference.

Malvern Hills Green Party and Green councillors on the district and county councils have backed the national party’s call for justice for victims of the Post Office scandal.

Reacting to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s statement that new primary legislation will be introduced to exonerate convicted postmasters, Green Party co-leader Carla Denyer said:

“It is incredible how long it has taken successive governments to address the clear injustice faced by hundreds of honest, hard-working people at the Post Office.

“It shouldn’t take a TV drama to get the government to do the right thing to address a manifest injustice on this scale.

“The severity and scale of the scandal was likely made much worse by the economic model chosen for the Post Office – a public corporation with the government as the sole shareholder, that was told to chase profits and allowed to take risks with unproven, outsourced technology while Ministers washed their hands of responsibility.

“No one was in charge, no one cared and when it all went wrong, no-one was responsible. We need models of ownership that put the public interest and accountability first. The scandal also raises questions about the obsession from all government parties with outsourcing and avoiding responsibility.

“Of course, it is right that every wrongful conviction is overturned as quickly as possible, but the fact that the government has been forced into bringing forward emergency legislation that overrides the justice process just underlines how numerous Ministers let this tragedy drift on into a full-blown crisis.

“This is not the first time government has been found wanting when the lives of people have been turned upside down by failings in public administration. Too many people are still waiting for justice, from Grenfell residents to infected blood scandal victims, to nuclear test veterans.

“Every one of these injustices needs resolving as soon as possible.”

A vital community resource in Upton-upon-Severn will stay open and warm this winter thanks to funding secured by a local councillor.

Green Party district and county Councillor Martin Allen secured £2,000 to keep Upton’s Community Fridge and Warm Bank running over winter. The service, which is run from Upton Baptist Church by Rev. Amy Wearing, brings people together to eat, connect, learn new skills and reduce food waste. It’s a place where local people can share food, which includes surplus from supermarkets, local food businesses, producers, households and gardens. Over winter it also serves as a Warm Bank, offering a heated space to those who may be worried about the cost of heating their own homes.

Speaking following a visit to the service, Cllr Allen said:

“I am happy to report that I have secured £2000 to ensure that the heating stays on and the food is hot.”

“I know that Amy will always be grateful for any help or donations. It is very sad that we need, in this day and age, to provide a hot meal but equally it is truly amazing how many local people and businesses help or donate. Their generosity and kind hearts do get noticed – thank you.”

The service is open at Upton Baptist Church on Old Street Monday to Friday from 10am to 1pm, with anyone welcome to attend for a chat and a hot light meal.

Malvern Hills Green Party’s local councillors support the call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

Following the statement from the Green Party of England and Wales that called for the end of the siege and blockade of Gaza, Green councillors from across the UK have been calling for unity across the political spectrum in demanding the government support an immediate peaceful resolution.

In a letter to both the Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly, and his Labour counterpart, Shadow Foreign Secretary David Lammy, Green co-leaders Carla Denyer and Adrian Ramsay, deputy leader Zack Polanski and Global Solidarity spokesperson Carne Ross set out how the only way to protect civilians is for the fighting to stop.

In addition, they call on both the Conservatives and Labour to throw their weight behind an “internationally arbitrated once-and-for-all settlement” so that “Israeli and Palestinian citizens can live in safety and security with their rights, at last, fully protected.”

Co-leader Carla Denyer said:

“The mass civilian suffering we have seen in Israel and Gaza has shocked the world. Over 700 civilians are being killed every day, one child every ten minutes. The dire humanitarian situation is clearly intolerable and must end.

“We cannot hear arguments about violence now somehow preventing further violence in future without shuddering. The lives of children cannot be bartered in this way.

“We are deeply concerned that neither the UK government nor the official opposition has joined international calls for a ceasefire. It is with deep regret that the Green Party feels the need to point out that at times like these, silence is complicity.

“We urge both the government and the Labour Party to listen to the British people, three-quarters of whom want an immediate ceasefire.”

In the letters, the Green Party sets out how war crimes have been committed by both sides since Hamas’s horrific attacks on 7 October.

Green Party co-leader Adrian Ramsay said:

“The awful attacks committed by Hamas on 7 October were brutal violence, and the hostages must be released unconditionally, but the horrific attacks we saw on that day cannot justify military actions that break international law.

“There is no military route to long-term safety and security for the Israeli and Palestinian peoples, as they both deserve. Instead, there must be a political settlement, based on the requirements of international law and beginning with an end to the occupation.

“The UK government should push for an internationally arbitrated once-and-for-all settlement that fully ends the occupation of Palestinian territories including East Jerusalem, in accordance with the requirements of international law.

“It used to be the case that international law was the basis of UK government policy, and the positions of both Conservatives and Labour.  It is deeply troubling that this seems to have been forgotten by both government and opposition.  Such an abandonment will do long-term harm to Britain’s already-questionable reputation as a defender of the international rules-based order.”

The Green Group of Councillors on Malvern Hills District Council wish to affirm and support these calls to bring an end to the suffering in Gaza, and condemn Islamophobia, antisemitism and all other forms of racism that are being propagated by those looking to divide our communities and who are seeking to dismantle any hope for a peaceful settlement.
